How to Apply Lipstick on Thin Lips: Lip Liner and a Defined Shape

Learn how to apply lipstick on thin lips using a close-toned lip liner, restrained overlining at the centre and a lip brush for precise edges.

How to Apply Lipstick on Thin Lips: Lip Liner and a Defined Shape

Prep the Lip Surface Before Drawing the Outline

After applying a lip balm, gently blot away any excess moisture before you begin. The goal is a soft surface that takes colour easily, without a thick slick layer that makes it harder to control your lines.

Choose a lip liner close to your natural lip colour or to the lipstick shade you plan to use, then define the cupid's bow with short strokes before connecting to the corners. If you are not yet confident, there is no need to draw the whole line in one go — working in segments makes it easier to check your direction as you go.

Keep Overlining at the Centre and Return to the Natural Edge at the Corners

If you want the lips to look fuller, gently cross just slightly beyond the natural edge at the centre of the upper or lower lip, then gradually bring the line back to the true position at the corners. Step back from the mirror after each small section to assess the overall balance, rather than focusing only on one spot and gradually moving further outward.

Blend the liner softly into the inner lip area, then use a lip brush to apply a small amount of lipstick. A lip brush is well suited to the cupid's bow and corners where precision matters, and it also helps preserve the outline you have already established.

Adjust the Look with Pigmentation and Finish

Thin lips can work equally well with a bold red, a warm brown or a plum shade. For a softer result, apply a light layer and blur the edges slightly; for a cleaner line, build coverage gradually. Colour choice and application technique can each be adjusted independently.

If you prefer a glossy finish, place a small amount of lip gloss at the centre first and observe how it sits relative to your liner before deciding whether to extend it further. Finally, check the corners and the join between the upper and lower lips while holding a natural, relaxed expression — this gives a more reliable read of the overall effect than assessing it with lips pressed together.
