Relax Your Expression Before Finding the Placement
Look straight into the mirror and observe the position of your cheekbones and the width of your cheeks. Smiling can help you locate where the cheeks round out, but it is best to return to a neutral expression before actually applying colour, then check where the blush will settle.
To create an upward visual direction, start with a small amount of colour at the higher, outer part of the cheekbone and blend outward and upward. Concentrate the colour on a small area first to avoid leaving a large, overly round patch of colour in the centre of the cheek with the very first stroke.
Choose Your Application Method Based on Formula
For powder blush, pick up a small amount of product and build it up gradually with a soft brush. For cream or liquid blush, disperse a small amount on the back of your hand first, then pat it onto the desired area. Different products vary in colour payoff and setting speed, so when using a formula for the first time it is worth working one side at a time to make comparison easier.
The shape and intensity of the blush need to be assessed together. Even when placed high on the cheekbone, colour that is too dense or has edges that are too sharp will still look jarring. Use a clean brush or sponge to gently work the outer edges so the colour blends into the base makeup rather than spreading further across the cheek.
Evaluate the Full Look Before Adding More
If the blush appears too heavy, use a sponge with a small amount of foundation remaining on it to lightly press along the edges and reduce the local contrast, then step back from the mirror to assess. Avoid rushing to cover everything with a thick layer of setting powder, as this will also alter the finish of the base makeup.
Finally, factor in your lip colour: when the lip shade is already vivid, the blush can be lighter; when the lip colour is soft, the cheeks can take centre stage. Blush techniques for round faces offer different visual options, and the final result should always be judged in the context of the whole face.
